The American Health Congress and the Jobing Foundation announce the winners of new Employer of the Year Awards to be presented at the Southern California Health Care Summit on Thursday October 29th.

The "Wellness Employer of the Year" and "Disability Friendly Employer of the Year" awards  will be given at the 2009 Southern California Health Care Summit in order to recognize employer leadership in key areas promoting health within their communities.

Providing a positive and healthy work environment is crucial for the betterment of the community and economy.  These atmospheres are created by employers who are willing to take proactive initiative and interest in the welfare of their employees in a variety of ways.  Congratulations to the 2009 winner of the Wellness Employer of the Year Award, Flexsteel Industries, Inc.

Providing opportunities for those with disabilities is also crucial for the betterment of our community and economy.  These opportunities are provided by employers who are willing to overcome common misconceptions and accommodate these employees. Thank you to the Inland Empire Disability Collaborative for assisting in choosing the 2009 Disability Friendly Employer of the Year Winner, Goodwill Southern California.

The Inland Empire New Beginnings Coalition, a collaborative of organizations committed to increasing the ability for people who are recovering from past mistakes to find employment for the betterment of themselves and the communities in which they live, is hosting the New Beginnings Resource Day on Wednesday, April 29 from 9:30am-3:30pm at DPSS (Department of Public Social Services - 5961 Mission Blvd, Riverside, CA 92509).  

 

This event will provide attendees with workshops and one-on-one sessions throughout the day that are focused on a variety of topics like expungement, financial advice and resume writing. While this event is not a job fair, these activities are designed to provide local ex-offenders with the resources they need to improve their lives.  

“There is a large untapped skilled labor force of people needing employment”, says Jodie Knez, U.S. Probation Officer. “While they are people who have made a mistake and have a felony on their record they are eager to prove that they are qualified to be employed”.

 

Many local organizations have come together to sponsor the New Beginnings Resource Day including Jobing.com, FLO 93.5 FM, Riverside County Department of Public Social Services GAIN, Gain, The Riverside Public Defender’s Office, Workforce Development of Riverside County, Springboard, tat 2 be gone, Servant’s Heart, Habbib Catering and the Taco Man Restaurant.

Community Bridge Builder - Karen Bowerman,Ph.D. Dean, Cal State, San Bernardino
Dr. Karen Dill Bowerman is the current Dean of the College of Business & Public Administration, at California State University, San Bernardino. She has a long list of academic accomplishments that include degrees, accreditations, and certifications from the likes of Texas A&M University, Wichita State University, and the Board of Examiners. She is a professor, published author, speaker and expert witness. FSA provides nutritious meals to more than 3000 seniors in need daily through our Senior Nutrition Services and relies on various funding sources. However, the disturbing truth is that with all of our resources we still have more than 400 seniors on a waiting list daily. As caring citizens we cannot allow any senior in our community to continue to go hungry!

That is why we have created Catering for a Cause to provide much needed funding in support of our More Than a Meal program. We have the kitchens; we have the cooks and the drivers who deliver the meals.  More Than a Meal was so named because our staff and volunteer drivers develop very personal relationships with the seniors we serve. Our staff and volunteers are sometimes the only human contact these seniors may have in any given day. They become the family tie that’s missing!

This is social entrepreneurship at its best, leveraging assets and capacities, in order to provide more mission related services!

It’s that easy. So why is it so darn difficult for you to effectively persuade someone in a job interview that you are their best hiring choice? You know in your heart that you would be perfect for the job; why can’t you explain that to them?

Before you go for the interview,

• Do your research. Be creative in seeking sources. Research them, their market conditions, advertising and public image. Know about their competitors. If you were buying the company or its stock, what would you want to know? It’s past, present and, most importantly, future.
• Reverse your mindset. Look at the job opportunity from THEIR perspective, THEIR needs and goals. Who are they? What would you accomplish in their first week? Month? Year? The more you find out about a job, its people and a company, the more facile you become in putting yourself in their shoes. So, really think about it. Visualize it.
• Act “as if” you own the challenges of the job. What will add to their bottom line profitability? Consider floating an idea by them as if you were already part of their team. You looked at the competition and you wondered based on the growing market for…. Have they considered….? Maybe they have; maybe they haven’t; but you are thinking as if you already worked there! I always notice when someone says “we” referring to a prior or current employer. The interviewer wants that buy-in and loyalty too.

During the interview maintain flexibility. Stay in the moment. No matter how much you may want to show off your research and ideas or tell them about yourself. Job descriptions change and unless you asked for the most recent one (always a good idea -ask HR), they still may be going in a different direction. So LISTEN to them, what they say and what they don’t say. Maybe what you thought they need is not what they think they need.

Remember, they are doing the hiring; follow their agenda, not your own. Confirm and explore what they need and want. If you know yourself and your strengths well enough, you can customize your story to clearly demonstrate that you meet their needs.

January Meeting Topic Where's My Job?  How To Be Competitive in This Recession As much of the world is experiencing vast losses due to a failing economy, employees are seeking to secure their jobs.  This talk is focused around how to gain a competitive advantage in the job market. 
This meeting will review current market statistics, and discuss competitive strategies for securing employment.  A 3-step approach for achieving a competitive employment advantage is proposed.  The approach is centered on modernizing learning and connectivity using web technologies. Practical examples will be discussed in detail.

Erik Rolland, PhD

Erik Rolland, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Management Information Systems at the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management, as well as with the Computer Science & Engineering Department at the Bourns College of Engineering at the University of California at Riverside.  Prior to entering academia, Dr. Rolland was a management consultant in Europe.  He holds a Ph.D. in Decision Sciences & Information Systems from the Fisher School of Business at the Ohio State University.
