Blog Post: The Power of Bilingualism: The Competitive Advantage

posted Thursday, May 8, 2008 12:36 AM

The Hispanic American influence is absolutely astonishing. Never in the history of this country has any one group dominated the culture of America as Hispanic Americans do today and the driving force behind this paradigm shift is increasingly the ability to be fluent in both English and Spanish.

Bilingual America is here. Products and services offered by American powerhouse multinational companies have drastically changed. New products are being designed to appeal and attract the Hispanic population and its unique bilingual characteristic.

Businesses are positioning themselves to capitalize on this market because they now see it first hand in the changing face of America , its employee base and the languages that they are speaking. With this in mind, large companies are reaching out in both Spanish and English to appeal to the Hispanic American community’s unique blend of American and Hispanic heritage.

This corporate transformation is not driven by an overnight conversion to becoming better human beings, but by the purchasing power of the Hispanic population which is estimated to be at $1 trillion by 2008.  Companies are desperate to remain competitive and becoming relevant in today’s diversity driven workplace means addressing the needs of the growing millions of Hispanic Americans by hiring bilingual Hispanics in order to properly position products and services before a demographic that demands both English and Spanish capable companies.

Bilingual Employees: The Evolution

As companies hire bilingual Hispanics, these new employees are changing the companies from within.  Hispanic employees are influencing the perception of what skills are truly needed in the corporate world to reach out to the Hispanic community by utilizing their bilingual skills in attracting more consumer dollars to the bottom line. Still, organizations are in different stages of development regarding bilingual capable workers and the ones that are fully matured in their willingness to embrace the inherent value of having a bilingual workforce will be the ones better able to cope with a consumer base that is Hispanic and growing in population, purchasing power numbers and increasingly both English and Spanish language capable.

Bilingualism: The New Nirvana for Today

But there really is no argument on the benefits of being bilingual anymore. Hispanics are the workers of today and definitely of tomorrow.  Everywhere you look you will find Hispanics working, eating, dancing, and purchasing goods and services to the tune of billions of dollars. The forward –thinking corporations understand the importance of bilingualism and the business case in order to attract this exploding demographic. Organizations are developing strategic plans to address the need for a bilingual workplace in order to earn the good will of the Hispanic community and a reputation as an employer of choice. When Hispanics learn of an organization that appreciates the community’s bilingual culture, they will become loyal to the organization’s products and services and seek it out as an employer and vendor of choice, and inevitably, will be more likely to boast about the company to family and friends. The result for these forward-thinking corporations with their bilingual strategies will be a competitive advantage that is made up of a positive employer brand that better attracts the best talent in the Hispanic marketplace in addition to attracting the $1 trillion dollar purchasing power of this growing community.

?!?! We wouldn't be having this conversation if all the Hispanic students decide to finish school and learn English as one official language.
