Blog Post: What to expect at the Career Expo!

posted Wednesday, February 6, 2008 9:33 PM

It's not just a typical job fair.  It's not even close!  With Jobing.com, our Career Expo's bring together great local employers, with fantastic local job seekers!  So be prepared!  Here are just a few tips so you can maximize your experience at the Jobing.com Career Expo as a job seeker:

1. Dress for Success!  You only have one chance to make the first impression with a potential future employer.  Make it count-  Dress professional, act professional, and treat every business contact as an interview.

2. Review your resume!  Does your resume stand out?  Is in clear of any spelling errors?  Is it accurate?  These are simple ways to catch employer’s eyes, and we have just the solution! A resume review workshop! Bring your resume and have one of the outstanding resume reviewers take a look at your resume before handing it out to numerous potential employers.

3. Ask for the interview!  You would be amazed at how many resumes I receive for a sales position, and yet, they never ask for the sale! (Which is essentially you!)  In any interview, or resume, you are essentially selling your skills and your experiences to get your foot in the door for an interview.  Don't miss an opportunity to make it happen.  Now, even if you are thinking "But I'm not a sales person", don't panic!  Just simple follow-up skills, and persistence is the key.

4. So you had the interview... now what?  Ok, so here is your chance to separate yourself from the other applicants.  Hand-write a thank you note, or a follow-up letter of your interest for the job to the person that interviewed you!  Keep in mind, that recruiters are extremely busy, and receive a number of resumes.  What is going to set you apart from all the rest?  Sometimes a thank you letter is all it takes to put your name on top of that list of considerations!

5. SMILE!  Have fun!  Let your personality SHINE!  This is YOUR TIME TO IMPRESS!!!

I hope this gives you an idea of what we (as recruiters) like to see.  This is only the guideline, so feel free to expand your own creativity to this list.  We look forward seeing you at the Career Expo on February 21st, 2008 at the Los Angeles Convention Center !
